Can Women Wear Men’s Rugby Boots?

Of course! The only real difference between women’s and men’s rugby boots is how they fit. Men’s rugby boots tend to be slightly wider, while boots for ladies are generally made to fit narrow feet. But regardless, there’s nothing to say you can’t wear men’s boots as a women – give them a try!

Experts such as those from Lovell Rugby, suggest sizing down by 1.5 sizes if you’re going to wear men’s boots as a woman. This means, if you’re size 8 in women’s sizing, you should buy size 6.5 in men’s.

What Does Fg and Sg Mean When Shopping for Rugby Boots?

When you’re looking for the best rugby boots for women, you might want to look for togs with metal studs or rubber/plastic studs – and that’s what Fg or Sg stands for. Fg refers to ‘firm ground’, meaning they are rugby boots with plastic or rubber studs, generally used in the summer or for sevens rugby. Sg stands for ‘soft ground’, which means the studs are metal as they need to pierce the soft ground to give you enough grip during the rainy days as a rugby player in the UK.

As a beginner starting out, I’d opt for a hybrid of the two. Look for boots with both metal and moulded studs, like this example of the Nike Tiempo’s I bought myself recently:

How to Find the Best Rugby Boots for Women

I built my list of the top rugby boots for women and girls by scouring the internet, checking out reviews and looking for trusted brands such as Under Armour, Nike, Adidas and Canterbury.

My list is subjective, though, and you will need to do your own research to find the right rugby boots for you as a woman.

I’ve spent 20+ years playing rugby as an amateur and I can confidently say that I’m still getting to grips with all the options available to us, especially as technology evolves and more brands begin to offer boots.

In my experience, you should check out the most reputable brands, read through reviews and look for boots that suit your individual needs. You will notice some rather sketchy ads on retailers like Amazon, where their boots are designed to look suspiciously similar to well known brands, but for half the price. And if you’ve read any of my other content, you’ll know that I always say – you get what you pay for when it comes to rugby boots.

It took me some time to figure out the best size, brand, style and designs of rugby boots for me, so I hope I’ve helped you on your journey to becoming the rugby player you want to be. Look good, feel good – am I right?
